Skin Cancer Reconstruction
Skin is the body’s largest organ and provides protection against sunlight, injury and infection. If you’ve had prolonged exposure to the sun’s ultraviolet rays, you’re at higher risk for developing skin cancer. Have you noticed an unusual growth on your body? Are you concerned that it could be skin cancer?
Anyone can get skin cancer – no matter what your race, age, skin type and no matter where you live or what you do. There are different types of skin cancer, each ranging in severity. The most common and least dangerous is basal cell carcinoma, which tends to grow slowly and rarely spreads beyond its original site. The next most-common is squamous cell carcinoma, frequently appearing on the lips, face or ears and sometimes spreading to lymph nodes or internal organs. It can be life-threatening if not treated. The least common, malignant melanoma, is the most dangerous. If discovered early enough, it can be completely cured. If not treated quickly, however, it could spread throughout the body and is often deadly.
Any spot or growth can be surgically removed, keeping full function and appearance of the area (important if the cancer is in a highly visible area). A small cancerous growth can be removed quickly and easily, using local anesthesia. For a larger and/or expanding growth, however, major surgery may be required.
